Air conditioner installation in Akwesasne, NY, sized and charged the way the manufacturer intended

The efficiency rating on a new air conditioner assumes a correct installation. We calculate the cooling load, match the condenser to the indoor coil, and verify charge and airflow before calling the job finished.

An air conditioner is only as good as the day it goes in

Two identical air conditioners can deliver very different results depending on how they are installed. One cools evenly, runs quietly and holds indoor humidity in a comfortable range. The other short cycles, leaves upstairs bedrooms warm and uses noticeably more electricity. The difference almost always comes down to sizing, refrigerant charge and airflow, the three things a buyer cannot see on the brochure.

Sizing is where many installations go wrong first. Replacing a three-ton unit with another three-ton unit feels safe, but the original may have been oversized when it was installed, and the house may have changed since with new windows, added insulation or a finished basement. An oversized air conditioner satisfies the thermostat before it has run long enough to pull moisture out of the air, which is why oversized systems often leave a home cool but clammy. We run a room-by-room load calculation to size equipment for the house you actually live in.

The indoor side matters just as much. A new condenser must be paired with an evaporator coil the manufacturer has rated it with, and the blower must deliver enough air across that coil for the combination to reach its rated capacity and efficiency. If the existing furnace or air handler cannot do that, we tell you before installation rather than after. And if the ducts are undersized or leaking, the remedy may involve work described on our Ductwork Install And Replace and Duct Sealing pages.

When it is time to plan a new air conditioner

Replacement is easiest when it is planned rather than forced by a failure in July.

  • The system is well into its second decadeMost central air conditioners reach the end of reliable service somewhere in their teens, sooner in harsh conditions or with poor maintenance.
  • Repairs are getting larger and more frequentA leak this year, a fan motor last year and a compressor warning now is a pattern worth taking seriously.
  • It still runs on R-22Recharging an older system is expensive and supply keeps shrinking, so any significant leak on these units raises the replacement question.
  • Rooms never feel rightPersistent humidity, uneven temperatures or constant running on moderate days can mean the equipment was never sized correctly.
  • Electric bills keep climbingWorn compressors and fouled coils lose efficiency gradually, and a newer unit rated under current SEER2 standards can use considerably less power.

From assessment to first cool evening

Every installation follows the same sequence, so nothing is skipped on a busy week.

  1. Load calculation and survey

We measure rooms and windows, note orientation and insulation, and inspect the existing furnace or air handler, coil, ducts, electrical service and condensate route.

  2. Equipment matching

You receive options with condensers and coils that the manufacturer has rated together, along with the blower settings needed to reach the listed capacity.

  3. Removal and preparation

The old refrigerant is recovered into certified cylinders, the old unit is removed, and the pad, disconnect and whip are replaced or corrected where needed.

  4. Line set and brazing

Refrigerant lines are replaced or flushed, brazed with nitrogen flowing to prevent internal scale, then pressure tested with dry nitrogen to confirm there are no leaks.

  5. Deep vacuum

A vacuum pump and micron gauge pull moisture and air out of the system until the reading holds steady, which protects the compressor and the refrigerant oil.

  6. Charge and airflow commissioning

Refrigerant is weighed in and fine-tuned by superheat or subcooling, and blower speed is set against measured static pressure and temperature split.

What shapes the price and timeline of an AC installation

Capacity and efficiency tier are the obvious variables, but installation conditions often matter as much. A replacement that reuses a correctly sized, clean line set and pairs with a compatible furnace is straightforward. A job that needs a new evaporator coil, a new line set routed through finished walls, an electrical upgrade or a condensate pump takes more time and material.

Variable-speed and two-stage systems cost more up front and require compatible thermostats and indoor blowers, but they run longer at lower speeds, which improves humidity control and reduces noise. Whether that is worth it depends on your climate, how long you plan to stay in the home and how sensitive your household is to humidity. We explain those tradeoffs in plain terms with every proposal.

Why we insist on a deep vacuum and a measured charge

Air and moisture left inside a new refrigerant circuit react with refrigerant oil to form acids and sludge that attack compressor windings and clog metering devices. A proper evacuation with a micron gauge is the only way to know they are gone. It adds time to the installation, and it is one of the most effective things an installer can do for the compressor's lifespan.

Charging by feel or by the pressure on a single gauge is not good enough for modern systems. We weigh in the factory charge adjusted for line length, then confirm it with superheat on fixed orifice systems or subcooling on systems with an expansion valve, under stable operating conditions.

Living with your new air conditioner

After installation, the technician shows you how to set the thermostat, where the filter is and how often it should be changed, and where the condensate drains. Keep the outdoor unit clear of plantings by a couple of feet on every side and avoid stacking anything on top of it. A yearly checkup keeps the coil clean and the charge verified, which protects both efficiency and the manufacturer warranty on many models.

Air conditioner installation FAQ

Only a load calculation can tell you. It accounts for square footage, insulation, window area and orientation, air leakage and occupancy. Square-foot rules of thumb and the size of the old unit are both unreliable starting points.

Not always. If the furnace is in good condition and its blower can deliver the airflow the new coil needs, it can stay. If it is old, has a failing blower or is incompatible with a variable-speed condenser, replacing both at once can save labor and improve performance.

Sometimes. It must be the correct diameter for the new unit, with no kinks or leaks, and properly cleaned if the refrigerant type is changing. Lines that are undersized, damaged or buried in inaccessible walls may need replacement or careful flushing.

Manufacturers publish sound ratings in decibels, and variable-speed units running at low speed are markedly quieter than older single-stage models. Placement also matters, so we discuss locations away from bedroom windows and patios where the layout allows.

SEER2 expresses seasonal cooling efficiency under updated federal test conditions. A higher number means less electricity for the same cooling. The real savings depend on how many hours your system runs each summer and your utility rates.
